June 2003: Quicksand in Iraq ... (updated)

The more you struggle, the deeper you sink. How could the administration not have forseen that the American occupying forces in Iraq would become a target of angry Iraqis and radical jihadists from all over the region? And be unable to leave so long as the situation worsens? It's a formula for the West Bank-isation of Iraq... was the administration in denial over this likelihood? Or are they in fact looking for this fight too? (..."Bring them on!")
This administration seems to think that the 'most powerful country on earth' need not bother with friends and allies, diplomacy, the United Nations, world court and other multinational frameworks, not to mention careful long term strategic thinking; all this is replaced with sheer attitude, backed with bombs. And at home, A.G. John "No Apologies" Ashcroft seems bent on turning America into a police state; and the rest of the Bush crew on delivering their wealthy backers and corporate sponsors a privileged position in a new society whose motto, suggested by a recent headline in Harper's, might be "Get Rich or Get Out!". Below we've posted excerpts and links to discussions of the big issues in play now which will likely continue to drive events throughout the summer.

Iraq WMD- Tripwire for Impeachment?

What kind of Empire?
Much discussion lately on "American Empire"... at this stage, if there is such a thing, it looks more like a crime-lord empire than, say, the British Empire. Basically, the Cabal gets to run the rackets, and boss every one around. And, as Paul Bremer recently said, "When you make an enemy of the United States, you'd better watch out. Sooner or later we will get you."

George Soros:
"The Bush vision of American supremacy is not only unsound and unsustainable, it is also in contradiction with American values. We are an open society. The principles of open society are enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. And the institutions of our democracy are protected by our Constitution. The fact that we have a bunch of far-right ideologues in our executive branch does not turn us into a totalitarian dictatorship. There are checks and balances, and the president must obtain the support of the people. I put my faith in the people. But in the end, open society will not survive unless those who live in it believe in it." (more...)

What Kind of Capitalism?
It's often said in the media that Enron was a management 'failure'. What happened at Enron wasn't due to failure; it was due to success- a vastly successful conspiracy to loot californians, shareholders, employees, pension funds, and state and federal governments, among others. A failure of 'oversight'? Oversight was well... unpatriotic, wasn't it? Both at Enron then, and in our post 911 'debates'. The only failure at Enron was the failure of the looters to reign in their limitless greed before utterly destroying the corporation whose management they were entrusted with. Could this happen with the country as a whole?

2004 Elections

Digital Danger- Demand Paper Voting Receipts!
Congressman Rush Holt has introduced a bill requiring, by fall 2004, voting machines to provide a paper vote receipt, to be confirmed by the voter, and locked away in case of dispute or recount. This is important because the new voting machines being introduced nationwide provide no means of checking the accuracy of the tally, the software is a corporate secret, the company is a republican donor, and the networks have stopped doing exit polls.

Choice Summer Reading

Sidney Blumenthal: The Clinton Wars.
"The most depressing thing about Blumenthal's book is that it keeps reminding you that these nasty little ideological zealots set out from Day One to commit the Politics of Personal Destruction. They had no honor, and they had no shame. They were just out to get him any way they could, and when sex proved a convenient route, they used it -- hypocrisy, be damned." -Molly Ivins.
The Clinton Warrior- What Sidney Blumenthal got right. Excellent essay on Blumenthal, the book, the culture war, by David Greenberg, Washington Monthly, June 2003.

Georges Monbiot: The Age of Consent
-A manifesto for a new world order

"Now is the time to turn our campaigns against the war-mongering, wealth-concentrating, planet-consuming world order into a concerted campaign for global democracy. ... Our task is not to overthrow globalisation, but to capture it, and to use it as a vehicle for humanity's first global democratic revolution."

Sir Martin Rees: Our Final Hour
"A Scientist's Warning: How Terror, Error, And Environmental Disaster Threaten Humankind's Future In This Century - On Earth And Beyond". Rees gives us a 50-50 chance, and expects an apocalypse from human actions. (also, an MSNBC review)

Olivia Judson: Dr.Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation
Dr. Judson manages to convey a lot of modern evolutionary biology while being very amusing at the same time. A typical passage: "Among primates as among insects, it is a rule of thumb that in species where females consort with one male at a time, penises are small and uninteresting... A male mountain gorilla can weigh 460 pounds, but his penis is a measly two inches long and entirely devoid of knobs and spikes. The Argentine lake duck puts him to shame..."

Cat De Rham and Michelle Gil: The Spirit of Yoga
The beautiful and captivating Cat De Rham has given us one of the best yoga books ever; structured on Patanjali's sutras. "amazing and magical".
